Jesus understands our weakness because He has faced every kind of temptation we face.
“For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.”Hebrews 4:15 (KJV)
What does “Understood” mean in Hebrews 4:15?
The phrase touched with the feeling of our infirmities means that Jesus sympathizes with our weaknesses from experience. The verse also says He was tempted in every way and yet did not sin.
Going deeper
It is easy to imagine that God stands far off, unaware of how hard it is to be human. Hebrews says the opposite. We have a high priest who can be touched by what we feel. Jesus was hungry, tired, misunderstood, and betrayed. He knows what pressure feels like, and He came through it without sin. That means we can come to Him with our struggles knowing He will not respond with surprise or contempt.
This is good news for anyone who is ashamed of their temptations. Being tempted is not itself a sin. Jesus was tempted and remained faithful. When you feel pulled toward something you know is wrong, bring that feeling to Him honestly. He will not brush it away. He understands, and He is able to help. The very next verse invites us to come boldly to the throne of grace to find help in time of need.
