The fast God chooses is one that sets people free.
“Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?”Isaiah 58:6 (KJV)
What does “The fast” mean in Isaiah 58:6?
Isaiah speaks of bands, burdens, and yokes, all pictures of heavy things put on people. God's chosen fast is about removing them.
Going deeper
The people in Isaiah's day were fasting and wondering why God did not seem to notice. God answers that their fasting was empty because they were treating their workers harshly and ignoring the needy. Then He describes the kind of fast He wants: to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke. Notice how outward-facing it is. The fast God chooses is not measured by how hungry we get, but by who is helped.
This does not mean that giving up food or comforts is worthless. It means that it should lead somewhere. If you are fasting this Lent, ask what the freed-up time or money could do for someone. Perhaps you could pay a bill for a neighbor, visit someone who is lonely, or speak up for someone who is being treated unfairly. Let your discipline become a doorway to love, and God will be pleased.

Lord, let my fasting do more than change me. Use it to lift burdens and set people free, and lead me to those who need help. In Jesus' name, amen.
