Paul writes, Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it. The standard is Christ, and the measure is giving oneself. This is not a call to dominate but to sacrifice. Christ's love was patient, sacrificial, and aimed at the good of the one loved. Whatever our state in life, this is the pattern for how to love the people closest to us.
Marriage is one place where this is lived out, but the principle reaches every close relationship. Ask what giving yourself would look like for the person you love most. It might be listening when you are tired, letting go of being right, or putting their need before your preference. Choose one specific act of self-giving for someone close to you this week. Do it quietly, without expecting credit, in the way that Christ loved. Small sacrifices, made cheerfully and consistently, say more than grand gestures. Begin with one today.
