Salvation is a gift from God, not something we earn.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)
What does “Saved by grace” mean in Ephesians 2:8-9?
Grace means favor that is freely given and not earned. Paul says salvation comes through faith, which is trusting in what God has done, and that it is entirely the gift of God.
Going deeper
Lent can feel like a season of effort, with its fasts and disciplines. Paul's words stand as a needed reminder of what those efforts are not. They do not buy our way into God's favor. By grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves. It is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast. If anyone could earn salvation, they would have something to be proud of. Because it is a gift, all we can do is receive it with thanks.
This changes the purpose of our disciplines. We fast, pray, and give not to win God's love but because we already have it. They are ways of making room for Him and of responding with gratitude. If you have been trying to earn approval from God or from others, rest today in this truth. Say thank you for what you have been freely given. Then let good works flow out of gratitude, as the next verse says they are meant to.
