There was no room at the inn, but there can be room in our hearts.
“And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.”Luke 2:6-7 (KJV)
What does “Room” mean in Luke 2:6-7?
Luke tells us there was no room for the family where travelers usually stayed, so the baby was laid in a manger, the feeding trough for animals. It is a plain, honest detail, and Luke does not decorate it.
Going deeper
Luke tells the birth of Jesus in a few simple lines. A young couple is far from home, the town is crowded, and the child is born, wrapped in cloths, and laid in a manger. There is no drama in the telling and no mention of anything grand. The Savior of the world arrives in the humblest of settings, and the world around Him is too busy to notice.
The phrase no room has been repeated in sermons for many years, and it still asks a fair question. Is there room in our lives for Christ? On this last evening before Christmas Day, take a few minutes to make room. Turn off the noise, put down the list, and sit with the fact that God came to be with us. Ask Him to come into the corners that are crowded, and to make His home with you. He does not need a palace. He is happy to be welcomed.
