Standing firm begins with submitting to God, and then the enemy flees.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”James 4:7 (KJV)
What does “Resist” mean in James 4:7?
The Greek word for submit means to place yourself under someone's authority. Resist means to stand against, holding your ground.
Going deeper
James gives the order carefully: submit first, then resist. We often try to resist temptation in our own strength and grow tired quickly. James suggests that strength comes from placing ourselves under God's direction. Resisting is then not a solo effort but a stand we take with Him behind us. The promise attached is that the devil will flee, which means he does not have the last word.
That does not mean the struggle is easy or short. It means we are not helpless. If you are facing a temptation this week, start by bringing it to God and telling Him you want His way more than your own. Then take one concrete step of resistance. Turn away, walk out, or say no out loud. Trust that as you stand with God, the pressure will not last forever, and that He is stronger than what is pressing on you. Stand where He stands, and the ground under you is firm.

Lord, I place myself under Your care and Your direction. Give me strength to stand firm, and thank You that You are stronger than what tempts me. In Jesus' name, amen.
