Followers of Jesus are called to be gentle and considerate toward everyone.

Paul lists a set of instructions about public behavior. The word meekness means gentleness and strength under control, and he says it should be shown to all people without exception.

Paul tells Titus to remind believers To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. The word all appears twice. It includes friends and strangers, people we like and people we do not. To speak evil of no one is a high standard, and it covers gossip, insults, and online comments. To be gentle and to show meekness means to keep strength under control, choosing kindness over force.
It can be hard to be gentle with people who are difficult or who disagree with us. Yet this verse gives no exceptions. Consider how you speak about others, in person and online. Are there people you talk about unkindly? Choose one person to speak well of this week. And when you feel provoked, take a breath and respond with meekness. Gentleness is not weakness. It is power that has learned to serve.
