Light does not wait for the darkness to end. It arrives in the middle of it.
“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.”Isaiah 9:2 (KJV)
What does “Light” mean in Isaiah 9:2?
The prophet describes people who walked in darkness and then saw a great light. The shadow of death is a picture of the deepest darkness, the kind that seems to have no way out.
Going deeper
Isaiah wrote to people living under the shadow of war and fear. Darkness in Scripture often means more than the absence of light. It stands for confusion, sorrow, and being lost. Notice that the people in this verse are walking. They are still moving and still trying, and the light finds them in the middle of the journey, not at the end of it.
Matthew later connects this promise to the start of Jesus' ministry in Galilee. The light did not come as a spotlight for the powerful. It came to ordinary people in a region that many overlooked. If you are walking through a dark stretch this Advent, the verse is for you. You do not have to reach a certain place before the light can find you. Christ comes to people where they are, and one candle in a dark room is enough to change what you can see.
