What does “Honor” mean in Romans 12:10?
The Greek word for brotherly love is philadelphia, the affection of family. The phrase preferring one another means taking the lead in showing honor to others.

Paul describes what love looks like in the church. It is warm, like the affection of a family, and it is generous in honor. The phrase in honour preferring one another suggests that we should compete to show respect, each one trying to outdo the other in giving honor rather than in receiving it. That is the opposite of the usual way people jockey for status.
Honor can be shown in small, practical ways. It means thanking someone by name, listening to a younger person as seriously as an older one, giving credit to others for their work, and letting someone else go first. It is especially meaningful to honor those who are not often noticed. Think of someone in your family, church, or workplace who rarely receives recognition. Look for a way to honor them this week, and let them know that you see and value them. Honor costs little and means much.
