This well-known verse comes from the longest chapter in the Bible, a long song about the goodness of God's word. The picture is practical. A lamp for the feet does not light up the whole journey. It shows the next step, and then the next. That is often how guidance works. God does not usually show us the full path. He shows us enough to keep walking.
