What does “Greatest of all” mean in Matthew 23:11?

Jesus says this to the crowds and His disciples in a passage that criticizes religious leaders who loved honor. He reverses the usual idea of greatness: the greatest is the one who serves.

Jesus says simply, he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. In the world, the great are served. In Jesus' kingdom, the great serve. He was not only teaching this but living it. The very next chapters show Him washing feet and giving His life. Greatness in His eyes is found in humble, practical help offered to others without regard for recognition.

That changes how we measure our lives. Instead of asking how many people serve us or notice us, we can ask whom we are serving. Look for a chance this week to serve in an unglamorous way: cleaning up after an event, helping someone move, listening to someone who is overlooked. Do it without fanfare. Following Jesus means embracing the towel and the basin, not the throne. In serving, we find the greatness He describes. Ask God for opportunities to serve, and say yes to the next one that comes. Greatness in His kingdom is often quiet and unseen by others.
