What does “Gentleness” mean in Proverbs 15:1?
The Hebrew word for soft means gentle or tender. The verse contrasts it with grievous words, which are harsh and painful, and says the two produce very different results.

Anyone who has been in a heated conversation knows the truth of this verse. A sharp reply feeds the fire, and a calm one starves it. The writer is not saying that a soft answer is weak. It takes strength to stay gentle when someone is angry. It requires control over our own reactions, which is one of the marks of wisdom. The proverb is practical, and it works in marriages, workplaces, and churches.
Gentleness is also a gift that Christ gives, and He described Himself as gentle and lowly in heart. When someone speaks harshly to you this week, take a breath before responding. Lower your voice, not raise it. Ask a question rather than fire back a defense. You cannot control how others speak, but you can choose how you answer. A soft answer will not always end the conflict, yet it often opens a door that anger would have closed.
