Jesus finished the work of salvation, and nothing needs to be added.
“When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”John 19:30 (KJV)
What does “Finished” mean in John 19:30?
The Greek word tetelestai means it is completed. It can carry the sense of a task done or a debt paid in full.
Going deeper
Good Friday is a day of sorrow and of gratitude. John tells us that Jesus received the sour wine offered to Him, said it is finished, bowed His head, and gave up His spirit. He did not say I am finished. The work He came to do was complete. Every promise pointing toward the cross had been fulfilled, and the price of our forgiveness had been paid. What no one could do for themselves, He had done for them.
Sit for a moment with those words. Nothing needs to be added to what He accomplished. We cannot earn it, and we do not need to. That does not make the day easy, but it does make it hopeful. Today, take some quiet time to read John 18 and 19. If you are able, gather with others to worship. Then rest in this truth: the work is done, and we are loved.
