When we confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive and cleanse us.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”1 John 1:9 (KJV)
What does “Confession” mean in 1 John 1:9?
The Greek word for confess is homologeo, which means to say the same thing, to agree with God about our sin. The verse says He is faithful and just to forgive.

John writes to believers about walking in the light. In the light we see ourselves honestly, which includes seeing our failures. Confession means agreeing with God about what is wrong and turning toward Him. The promise attached to it is remarkable. God is faithful, meaning He will do what He said, and just, meaning that forgiveness rests on what Christ has done. He forgives and cleanses us completely.
Some people hold back from confession because they fear God's response. This verse tells us what to expect: forgiveness and cleansing. There is no lecture at the end of it. If something is weighing on your conscience, bring it to God plainly today. Name it without excuses. Then receive His forgiveness, and let go of the shame. A clean conscience is one of the great gifts of the Christian life, and it is available to us whenever we ask. Honesty with God is the first step toward healing.
