A clean heart is not something we make. It is something God creates in us.

Going deeper
David knows he cannot fix his own heart. He does not ask for help to try harder. He asks God to create, using a word that points to what God alone can do. That is both humbling and hopeful. If a clean heart had to come from us, we would be stuck. Because it comes from God, no one is beyond it, however far they have drifted or however often they have failed.
The second half of the prayer asks for a right spirit, a steady one that will not waver as before. Change of this kind is a gift, though we still take part by praying, obeying, and staying near to God. As Lent begins, this short prayer is one you can carry through the day. Say it slowly when you wake, in traffic, or before bed: create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
