What does “Burdens” mean in Galatians 6:2?
The Greek word for burdens is baros, which means a heavy weight. Paul says bearing one another's burdens is how we live out the law of Christ, which is love.
Going deeper
Life brings weights that are too heavy for one person to carry alone, such as grief, illness, financial strain, and family trouble. Paul does not say that people should figure it out on their own. He says that believers should share the load. This is one of the great gifts of the church, a community in which no one has to face the hard things alone.
Bearing burdens takes many forms. It might be bringing a meal to someone who is grieving, driving a friend to an appointment, or sitting quietly with a person who is hurting. Often the best help is simply presence. It also requires us to be willing to let others carry our burdens, which can be hard for those who prefer to appear strong. Ask yourself whether you need to share a load this week, or whether you could lift one for someone else. No one is meant to carry life alone.
