The promise of the Spirit is for you, your children, and everyone far away whom God calls.
“For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call.”Acts 2:39 (KJV)
What does “Afar off” mean in Acts 2:39?
Peter says the promise reaches beyond those who were listening to their children and to all who are afar off. Many understand that phrase to include people in distant places and future generations.
Going deeper
Peter's sermon ends with a wide offer. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call. Think about the circles he draws. It is for you who hear it today. It is for your children, the next generation. And it is for all that are afar off, those far away in distance, in culture, or in time. God's call has no border.
That includes us, centuries later, and it includes people we have not yet met. It also gives us a reason to care about those who feel far from God, whether across the ocean or across the street. Is there someone in your life who seems distant from faith? Pray for them by name, and ask God to draw them near. Look for a way to show them kindness this week. The promise reaches to the afar off, and we can be part of how it arrives.
Reflect
Who seems far from God in your life, and how could you pray for and reach out to them?
Pray
Lord, thank You that Your promise is for me, my children, and all who are far away. Draw near those who feel distant from You, and use me to help. In Jesus' name, amen.
