Paul quotes what may be an early hymn about Christ. It moves downward step by step. He was in the form of God, and He did not cling to that equality. He took the form of a servant. He was made in the likeness of men. He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Each line goes lower. It is the opposite of how the world climbs. And the goal of all of it was our rescue.

Paul introduces this hymn with a practical instruction: let this mind be in you. He is speaking to people who were quarrelling over status. The remedy is to think as Jesus thought, putting others first and serving without demanding recognition. As Lent nears its end, ask where pride is showing in your own life. Choose one small act of service this week, and do it quietly. Following the humble Christ is a way of becoming free of the need to be great.
