We can invite God to examine us, and He will lead us kindly.

The Hebrew verbs for search and try describe careful examination, like testing metal. David asks God to look inside him, and he asks to be led afterward.
Going deeper
Most of us prefer not to be examined. Yet David makes this an open invitation: search me, O God, and know my heart. He has just said in the same psalm that God already knows him completely, so this prayer is not about giving God information. It is about giving Him permission. David asks God to point out any wicked way in him, and then to lead him in the way everlasting. The examination is for the sake of guidance.
There is something freeing in praying this way. We stop guessing about our motives and ask the One who sees clearly. He is gentle, and He is thorough. If you pray this today, be ready to listen. A thought may come, a memory or a conviction. Receive it as help, not as an accusation, and respond honestly. Lent is a good season for this kind of honesty. The path God leads us on is worth following.
