What does “Courage” mean in Luke 1:30?
Fear not is one of the most repeated phrases in Scripture. The word favour is the Greek charis, often translated grace, and it means God's kindness given freely.
Going deeper
The angel Gabriel appears to a young woman in Nazareth with startling news, and his first words are fear not. Mary was troubled by the greeting, and it is no surprise. It is a very human reaction. What is worth noticing is the reason he gives: she has found favor with God. Her courage was not built on her own confidence. It rested on the grace of the One who sent the message.
God often begins hard assignments with this phrase. It does not mean there is nothing to fear. It means fear does not get the last word, because He is with us. Think about what you are afraid of this week. It might be a health report, a family gathering, a change at work, or the future. Bring it to God by name. Then listen for the reassurance He gives, and take the next small step of trust, however shaky your legs feel.
