Paul writes, Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. It is a wise list because it recognizes that people need different things. Some need a firm word. Some need gentle comfort because they are discouraged. Some need practical support because they are weak. And all need patience. A caring community learns to tell the difference.

Ask which of these your friends and family most need from you. Perhaps someone needs encouragement, someone needs practical help, or someone needs an honest, gentle word. Ask God for discernment and for love. Then try one of these this week: a comforting message, a helping hand, or a patient listening ear. Patience is the one that applies to everyone, and it is often the hardest. Begin there. Ask God whom He is asking you to support, and start there. A patient, steady presence is often what people need most, and it costs little to offer.
