Hope in Christ holds the soul steady like an anchor in a storm.
“Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;”Hebrews 6:19 (KJV)
What does “Anchor” mean in Hebrews 6:19?
The writer compares hope to an anchor that is sure and steadfast. Unlike an ordinary anchor, this one reaches into the presence of God, where Jesus has gone ahead of us.
Going deeper
The writer says, Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil. An anchor does not stop the storm, but it keeps the ship from drifting onto the rocks. The hope described here is anchored not in the sea but in heaven itself, in the presence of God. It is sure, meaning it will not break, and stedfast, meaning it will not slip.
When life feels stormy, ask what your soul is anchored to. Circumstances, money, and other people can shift. Hope in Christ does not. Take a moment to name your anchor: Jesus is my hope, and He has gone before me into the presence of God. Repeat it when anxiety rises. You may still feel the waves, but you will not be carried away. Let the anchor hold, and rest in that steadiness. Grip that anchor again today, and let it hold.
Reflect
What is your soul anchored to when the storms come, and how could you deepen your hold on Christ?
Pray
Lord Jesus, You are my hope, the sure and steadfast anchor of my soul. Hold me steady in every storm. In Jesus' name, amen.
