Jesus sends us to make disciples and promises to be with us.
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”Matthew 28:19-20 (KJV)
What does “Go” mean in Matthew 28:19-20?
The Greek word translated teach here is matheteuo, which means to make disciples, or followers who learn from Jesus. The passage ends with a promise: I am with you alway.
Going deeper
These are the final words of Matthew's Gospel, spoken by Jesus to His disciples on a mountain in Galilee. He tells them to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing and teaching them. The commission is large, but it comes wrapped in a promise. Jesus does not send His followers out alone. He says, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.
Making disciples is not reserved for pastors or missionaries. Every believer has a part, whether it is welcoming a friend to church, sharing a story of faith, mentoring a younger believer, or supporting those who go to other countries. Think about who has helped you grow in faith, and who you might help. The same Jesus who gave the command is with you as you obey it. Take one small step of going this week, and trust Him to be with you.
