What does “Fruit” mean in Galatians 5:22-23?

Paul writes fruit in the singular, one fruit with many parts. Temperance translates the Greek word for self-control, and the phrase against such there is no law means there is no rule that could argue against these qualities.

Paul lists nine qualities: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. They are not achievements we produce by effort. They are fruit, the natural result of the Holy Spirit's work in a life that is connected to Christ. A tree does not strain to make apples. It grows them because of what it is and what feeds it.

That does not mean we do nothing. We cultivate the soil by prayer, Scripture, obedience, and fellowship, and we ask the Spirit to grow what we cannot. It can be encouraging to read the list slowly and ask where you see growth. Perhaps you are more patient than last year, or more at peace. It can also show where to ask for help. Pick one quality this week that you most need, and ask the Holy Spirit to produce it in you. Growth like this is slow and quiet, and it is easier to see over years than over days.
