Compassion is a clothing we choose to put on each day.
“Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;”Colossians 3:12 (KJV)
What does “Compassion” mean in Colossians 3:12?
The King James phrase bowels of mercies translates a Greek expression for deep, inner compassion. The ancients thought of the inner organs as the seat of tender feeling.
Going deeper
Paul uses the image of getting dressed. Because we are God's chosen and beloved people, he says, we should put on a certain wardrobe: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. These are not natural talents that only some people have. They are qualities we choose, day by day, the way we choose what to wear. And notice the order. He begins with who we are, chosen and beloved, before he says what to do.
That means compassion flows from security, not from pressure. When we know we are loved by God, we have something to give away. It is hard to show compassion when we feel empty ourselves. If you are running low on tenderness this week, start by receiving. Remember that you are chosen and beloved. Then, when you meet someone who is struggling, let that awareness soften your response. Put on compassion on purpose, and see what changes.
Reflect
Whose situation could you meet with compassion this week, and what would putting it on look like?
Pray
Lord, clothe me with compassion and kindness. Remind me that I am chosen and loved, and let that love overflow to others. In Jesus' name, amen.
