With the LORD as our shepherd, we lack nothing we truly need.

What does “Shepherd” mean in Psalm 23:1?
The phrase I shall not want means I will not lack anything. The psalmist says it in a settled way, as someone who has been well cared for.
Going deeper
David was a shepherd before he was a king, so he knew exactly what he was saying. A shepherd feeds the flock, finds water, protects from predators, and goes after the one that wanders. When David calls the LORD his shepherd, he is saying that God does all of this for him, and personally. The word my is easy to miss. It is not a general statement about God. It is a claim of relationship.
Saying I shall not want does not mean we will have everything we desire. It means that under this shepherd, we will not be without what we need. That is a different kind of security, and it changes how we live. We can stop scrambling to secure ourselves, because someone is watching over us. If you are anxious about provision, direction, or safety, read this verse slowly. Say the word my, and remember that the good Shepherd knows your name.
