Scripture

“Because of the LORD’s great love, we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness.” — Lamentations 3:22–23

Introduction

  • Jeremiah wrote these words from the literal ashes of Jerusalem — not from a place of comfort, but from the depths.
  • Right in the middle of five chapters of raw grief, he pauses to say: “Yet this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope” (Lam 3:21).
  • He doesn’t skip the pain to get to the promise — he looks straight at the fire and remembers something bigger than it.

 

Three Truths from Jeremiah’s Ashes

  1. God Sustains Us in Overwhelming Times
  • “We are not consumed” — total destruction was the norm all around Jeremiah, yet he wasn’t wiped out.
  • David, Job, Elijah, and even Jesus in Gethsemane all brought their genuine anguish to God rather than hiding it.
  • Faith isn’t the absence of struggle — it’s simply where you take the struggle.
  • Key line: God’s love is not the reason your pain disappears overnight. It’s the reason your pain doesn’t have the final say.
  1. God’s Compassion Is New Every Morning
  • You can’t survive today on yesterday’s grace — like manna in the wilderness, it’s given fresh, one day’s portion at a time.
  • Jesus said not to worry about tomorrow because today has enough of its own (Matthew 6:34).
  • Jeremiah wrote “new every morning” the day after his city burned — an act of defiant hope, not comfort.
  • Practical takeaway: ask for today’s grace, not the next ten years’ worth.

 

  1. God’s Faithfulness Invites Us to Surrender
  • Faithful = load-bearing, trustworthy, something you can put your whole weight on.
  • We exhaust ourselves gripping control over outcomes that were never ours to run.
  • Your part: wise action, obedience, the next right step. God’s part: the outcome, the timing, the results.
  • Jesus modeled surrender in the garden: “Not my will, but yours be done” (Luke 22:42).

 

Two Closing Movements

Remembering Is How Hope Gets Its Start

  • Hope isn’t a feeling that ambushes you — it’s a memory you choose to recall.
  • Like Israel’s memorial stones (Joshua 4), we need to keep a record of God’s past faithfulness to stand on in the next storm.

 

Jesus Is the Proof, Not Just the Promise

  • Every sunrise preaches faithfulness, yet the empty tomb proves it.
  • Because Christ rose, your worst regrets don’t write the ending. Death is a defeated enemy, and the same God who walked out of the grave walks with you this week.

 

 

Take-Home Action Steps

  1. Bring your honest heart to God — stop performing in prayer.
  2. Refuse to let fear write your theology — answer specific lies with specific truths.
  3. Live in today’s grace — ask for what today demands, nothing more.
  4. Do your actual part, then release the rest — open your hands.
  5. Keep a record — write down specific ways God has already come through for you.

 

Closing Thought

Your circumstances do not sit on the throne — God does. Great is His faithfulness. Let’s live as if we truly believe it.
